“Get the ball to Gerald!”

Our friends over at HardcourtMayhem.net wanted to let everyone know about a contest they have going on right now. The person who comes up with the best nickname for Jeff Foster wins a t-shirt, and everyone loves free stuff, especially given the economy. Hell, you can be done with Christmas if you win, so check it out.

Headlines from around the league…

Hardwood Paroxysm: We’re all pretty bizarre, some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all

Rob Mahoney takes a look at the Miami Heat, who he describes as a “rag-tag group of promising young players, cast-offs and stopgaps.” Sounds about right to me. Then again, it’s the kind of team who, if they end up as the 5th or 6th seed come playoff time, I wouldn’t want my team to have to play. Wade can take over a game at any moment, and Jermaine is showing plenty of signs of life. Add in Beasley, whose only consistent feature is his ability to fascinate, and you’ve got quite the spectacle. I’m still prediciting a Bosh-Wade tandem in Miami next year, but this team doesn’t have the “treading water” feel of a team like, say, the Jazz, who are biding their time until Boozer moves on.

Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel: Rested and ready – Redd eager to play Saturday

As impressive as Brandon Jennings has been so far this year, it’s tough to get a feel for the Bucks, largely due to Redd’s injury. If the two players can function together in the backcourt, their relatively unheralded early success might continue. Given BOB’s (Redd’s nickname, “Bombs Over Baghdad,” was given by a teammate for his propensity to hoist 3′s regardless of who he takes out, be they teammate or opponent) need to have the ball in his hands to thrive, and Jennings’ identity as a talented scorer, it should be compelling to watch regardless of the outcome.

ESPN: NBA Weekend Dime – players soon to be trade-eligible

Stein tackles a lot of topics here, including the Bulls potentially looking at Lawrence Frank if they do pull the trigger on firing Del Negro. Makes sense. By all accounts, Frank was well liked by his players, and was essentially just the chosen fall guy in Jersey. You’d be putting him back in a similar situation though – struggling team full of young, talented players. For teams like Jersey and Chicago, I wonder about the degree to which free agents consider the coaching situation – would guys like Wade/LeBron/Bosh/pick your favorite FA look more kindly on a team they’re considering joining if their coaching situation is stable-but-uninspiring, or if they have a seemingly good option who is the latest in a line of frequent turnovers at the position?

NBA Primetime: Phoenix Suns: flash from the past

I watched the Suns take down the Magic last night, and it really is a thrill to watch a 35 year old Nash playing at this high a level. There’s always controversy when his name is brought up regarding MVP discussions, but this season may be his best yet: I can’t believe how much he’s doing with so little around him. Not to knock the seemingly ageless Grant Hill or seemingly incapable of playing defense Amar’e, and J-Rich isn’t a bad player, but things drop off pretty quick after that. I love my former classmate Jared Dudley (does someone count as a classmate if you never actually saw them on campus during your four years at a school?), but come on. This team is playing great, and has had a brutal schedule to start the season. Shower Nash with love while you can, who knows how long he can sustain this level of play.

Forum Blue & Gold: “You just try to play through it”

In case you haven’t heard, Kobe broke his finger last night. Here’s FB&G’s take on the injury, which is being termed an “avulsion fracture”:

Kobe suffered an Avulsion Fracture on the first knuckle of his index finger on his right (shooting) hand (it happened when Corey Brewer went for a steal of a pass to Kobe from Fisher, deflected the ball and it hit Kobe’s hand at an odd angle). This means a small bit of bone is pulled off by the tendon as it seperates from the bone. This is the same injury he had on his pinky finger before, but Kobe himself admitted this is going to take more getting used to because of the location where the ball releases on his shot.
